How to get to Oxford Astrophysics |
---|
TRAIN: There are regular services from London Paddington which take about an hour. There are also regular links to other parts of the country via, Didcot, Reading and Birmingham. Oxford station is about a mile from the Department. The Cityline 2C/2D bus service leaves the train station every 30 minutes between 7:10am and 7.10pm Monday to Saturday and stops on Banbury Road at the intersection with Keble Road, right next to us.
COACH: Three services operate from London: the Oxford Express and Oxford Tube leave from London Victoria and pick up at several other locations in London including Marble Arch. They take you to the Oxford coach station which is about half a mile from the Department. Megabus is a new and extremely cheap service (single fares from £1!) which picks up and drops off on St. Giles, 5 minutes from the department. However this service only stops at Gloucester Place (near Baker Street tube) in London and the buses are less frequent than the other services. From Gatwick or Heathrow airport we reccommend using the fast and frequent coach service The Air Line which will take you to the Oxford Bus Station in the centre of Oxford. From there, you can walk (20 mins) or take a taxi to Astrophysics. A taxi from Heathrow to Oxford is the other option and can cost over £80. For coaches from other airports and destinations see www.gobycoach.com
CAR: Oxford is just a few miles from the M40. If you approach Oxford from the south-east (London) you should leave at junction 8 or coming from the north at junction 9. From the M4, exit at junction 13, towards Newbury, and take the A34 north to Oxford. The city centre is well signposted. The Department is in Keble Road,(follow the link above to a map) where there is on-street parking available, although this costs £1.50 per hour during the day and there is a maximum stay of 2 hours. Off-street parking within the Science Area is prohibited without a permit and you may be clamped without one. There are Park and Ride facilities at 4 sites on the outskirts of the city, well advertised from the ring road, with parking and frequent and quick (except at peak times) bus service to city centre costing £1.50. The parks are at: Pear Tree at junction of A34 and A44 on the north side; Thornhill by A40 just outside ring road to the east; Redbridge just inside the ring road in the south; Seacourt just inside the ring road in the west. The Police advise against leaving cars at these sites overnight.
