I am a Professor of Astrophysics at Oxford University, a University Research Fellow of the Royal Society and a Science Research Fellow of St John's College, Oxford.

Before this I was a Research Fellow of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 and before that I was a Research Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford.

I have written a book, together with Professor Stephen Blundell, called "Concepts in Thermal Physics" which was published by Oxford University Press in July 2006. This covers kinetic theory, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics and applications in astrophysics, atmospheric physics, information theory and many other areas.

Global Jet Watch is a project designed to make round-the-clock observations of an important object in our Galaxy. This object fires jets of hydrogen away from its black hole at speeds of over a quarter of the speed of light. In order to study this object, we are deploying a round-the-world network of telescopes.

Energy... beyond Oil is an immense challenge for Earth's inhabitants given the centrality of fossil fuels to the world's economies. Professor Fraser Armstrong and I have edited a book covering a wide range of present and future energy solutions including energy from the sun, wind, tides and fusion.
