Tips on writing FITS files from AIPS to disc

  1. Check that the environment variable $RUNFIL is set (by typing echo $RUNFIL). If it is not set, choose some convenient directory and type setenv RUNFIL /home/youruserid/runfiles/

  2. Download the example RUN file called BACKUP.HEXNUM and save it into $RUNFIL, but replacing HEXNUM with your AIPS userid expressed in base 36.

  3. To run this when you are logged into AIPS (as the user number you want to backup) type recat which will eliminate all the blank catalogue entries, and then check that the disc number you want to back up is set correctly in the BACKUP runfile you just saved to $RUNFIL. Then in AIPS type restore 0 then type run backup, and then type backup. The FITS files will now be written to disc with a name which is exactly the same as the name AIPS used. Once you are satisfied that all FITS files on disc are present and correct, you can zap your data from AIPS.
